What Is This Course About?
This five-day in-person course provides you with the essential skills to design, conduct, and analyze randomized controlled trials (RCTs) across various disciplines. The curriculum covers the fundamental principles of RCTs and advanced trial designs. It also addresses critical implementation issues such as participant recruitment, attrition prevention, and ensuring intervention compliance. You will learn about mixed-method designs for investigating intervention effectiveness and understanding underlying mechanisms.
Learning Goals
After this course you will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles and importance of randomization in experimental research
- Design rigorous RCTs, including sample size calculation, randomization procedures, and strategies to minimize bias
- Apply appropriate statistical methods for analyzing RCT data, including power analysis
- Develop skills to address critical implementation issues such as participant recruitment, attrition prevention, and ensuring intervention fidelity and compliance
- Gain proficiency in mixed-method designs for investigating intervention effectiveness and understanding underlying mechanisms
Assignments for the Course
Daily assignments (not graded). Develop a detailed RCT protocol for a research question in your field and critically analyze published RCTs and present findings to the class.

Who Is Your Instructor?
Liliana Abreu, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher in the Development Research Group, Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz (Germany), since 2019. She holds a PhD in Public Health from the Medical School of the University of Porto, Portugal. Liliana's research is dedicated to the prevention of violence against children, women, and vulnerable populations. She is deeply committed to the effective implementation of sustainable interventions in mental health, with a specific focus on addressing trauma, advancing gender equality, and enhancing mental health literacy. Liliana has a rich background in collaborating on interdisciplinary projects, ranging from social and health inequalities to behavioral sciences and the ethics of research. She has extensive experience in designing and implementing rigorous study protocols to evaluate the impact of complex public health interventions.
